Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
