The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Eager to roast; 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
