The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
