The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Eager to roast; 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
