The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 except those that pray 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
