The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 And his wife and his brother 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
