The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise, and warn, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And children present [with him] 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked around, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
