A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
