The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
