The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
