The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 124 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you; 125 So fear Allah and obey me. 126 I seek of you no reward for this; my reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 127 Do you build on every height a monument? Vain is it that you do: 128 “And prefer strong palaces, that perhaps you may live for ever?” 129 When you assault, you assault like tyrants! 130 So be fearful of God and follow me. 131 Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know, 132 "He has aided you with cattle and children. 133 And gardens and fountains; 134 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day." 135 They said, 'Alike it is to us, whether thou admonishest, or art not one of the admonishers; 136 this is nothing but a habit of the ancients: 137 and we are not going to be chastised [for adhering to it]!" 138 So they rejected him; and We destroyed them. There is certainly a sign in that; but most of them would not believe. 139 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 140
