The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 stay away from sins 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 it will be a hard day 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
