The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And believes in Al-Husna. 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
