The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and warn, 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and defilement flee! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 it will be a hard day 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 May he be condemned! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
