Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
