We seized Pharaoh's people with years of drought and scarcity of fruit so that they might remember. 130 But whenever prosperity came their way, they said: 'This is our due.' And whatever hardship befell them, they attributed it to the misfortune of Moses and those who followed him. Surely, their misfortune had been decreed by Allah - but most of them do not know that. 131 They said, "Whatever miracles you work to bewitch us, we will not believe in you." 132 Therefore We sent upon them widespread death, and the locusts and the lice and the frog and the blood, clear signs; but they behaved haughtily and they were a guilty people. 133 When the torment would strike them, they would ask Moses, "Pray for us to your Lord through your covenant with Him. If He saves us from the torment, we shall certainly believe in you and permit you and the children of Israel to leave". 134 But no sooner was the punishment withdrawn for a time to enable them to make good their promise than they broke it. 135 Wherefore We took vengeance on them and drowned them in the sea, for they belied Our signs and were neglectful of them. 136 And We made the people who were considered weak to inherit the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which We have blessed. And the fair Word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because of their endurance. And We destroyed completely all the great works and buildings which Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his people erected. 137 And We brought the Children of Israel over the sea, and they came upon a people cleaving to idols they had. They said, 'Moses, make for us a god, as they have gods.' Said he, 'You are surely a people who are ignorant. 138 what they are engaged in is doomed to destruction and all their works are in vain." 139 Should I seek any god for you except Allah? He has exalted you above the nations. 140 And [recall, O Children of Israel], when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, [who were] afflicting you with the worst torment - killing your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord. 141
