Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
KAF HA YA 'AIN SAD. 1 A mention of the Mercy of your Lord to his worshiper Zachariah, 2 Recall what time he cried unto his Lord with a cry secret. 3 and said, "My Lord, my bones have become feeble and my hair has turned white with age. Yet I have never been deprived in receiving from You the answer to my prayers. 4 And verily I fear my kindred after me, and my wife hath been barren; so bestow on me from before Thee an heir. 5 "(One that) will (truly) represent me, and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!" 6 [He was told], "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name." 7 He said, "Lord, how can I have a son? My wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age". 8 Allah said: even so! Thy Lord saith: it is unto Me easy, whereas surely I created thee afore when thou wast not aught. 9 [Zachariah] prayed: "O my Sustainer! Appoint a sign for me!" Said [the angel]: "Thy sign shall be that for full three nights [and days] thou wilt not speak unto men". 10 So he came forth unto his people from the Sanctuary, then he made signal to them, 'Give you glory at dawn and evening.' 11 O Yahya! take hold of the Book with strength, and We granted him wisdom while yet a child 12 And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous, 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not insolent, disobedient. 14 So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! 15
