(Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed: 34 who wants to drive you out of your land by his magic. Tell us, what do you advise us?" 35 They said, 'Put him and his brother off a while, and send among the cities musterers, 36 to bring every knowledgeable sorcerer' 37 The sorcerers were gathered at the appointed time on a wellknown day, 38 And the people were told: "Are ye (now) assembled?- 39 in order that we shall follow the sorcerers if they are the victors' 40 When the magicians came, they asked Pharaoh, "Shall we have a reward, if we are the winners?" 41 'Yes, indeed' he answered, 'and you shall become among those who are near stationed' 42 [And] Moses said unto them: "Throw whatever you are going to throw!" 43 Thereupon they threw their [magic ropes and their staffs, and said: "By Pharaoh's might, behold, it is we indeed who have prevailed!" 44 Then Moses cast down his staff and it swallowed up their lying invention, 45 And the magicians were thrown down prostrate; 46 Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 47 "The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)." 48 Said he: You believe in him before I give you permission; most surely he is the chief of you who taught you the magic, so you shall know: certainly I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and certainly I will crucify you all. 49 They said, 'There is no harm; surely unto our Lord we are turning. 50 We certainly hope our Lord will forgive our sins as we are the first to believe." 51
