'Ad (people) belied the Messengers. 123 Their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear God? 124 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 125 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 Build ye on every eminence a landmark in vanity? 128 Erect palaces (thinking) that you will live for ever, 129 "And when ye exert your strong hand, do ye do it like men of absolute power? 130 So fear you God, and obey you me; 131 "And keep your duty to Him, fear Him Who has aided you with all (good things) that you know. 132 He hath aided you with cattle and sons. 133 and gardens, and springs -- 134 Surely I fear for you the chastisement of a grievous day 135 They said: it is equal unto us whether thou admonishest or art not of the admonishers. 136 "This is no other than a customary device of the ancients, 137 "And we are not going to be punished." 138 So they gave him the lie, then We destroyed them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 139 And verily thy Lord? He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 140
