The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
