The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Star when it plunges, 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 Indeed it is not except a Revelation which is revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
