Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
