The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ WHEN WHAT IS to happen comes to pass -- 1 and there can be no denying its happening, 2 (a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down: 3 When the earth is shaken up convulsively, 4 and the mountains are totally shattered and crumble to pieces 5 So that they become a scattered dust, 6 And you shall be three sorts. 7 Companions of the Right, what are the Companions of the Right? 8 Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 9 And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race: 10 they who were [always] drawn close unto God! 11 In gardens of bliss [will they dwell] 12 a host of the ancients 13 And a few from among the latter. 14 They (will be seated) on gold-encrusted couches, 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 There shall go round unto them youths ever-young. 17 with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring 18 No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication: 19 And fruit; that they may choose. 20 and with the flesh of any fowl that they may desire to eat; 21 And gorgeous eyed fair maidens. 22 Like unto Pearls well-guarded. 23 a recompense for all that they did. 24 They will not hear any useless speech in it, or any sin. 25 But only the saying of: Salam!, Salam! (greetings with peace)! 26 As for the people of the right hand, how happy they will be! 27 They will live amid the thornless lot trees 28 and acacias flower-clad, 29 And extended shade, 30 and outpoured waters, 31 and fruits abounding 32 Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden, 33 And carpets raised. 34 Surely We have made them to grow into a (new) growth, 35 And made them virgins, 36 loving companions, matching in age, 37 For the Companions of the Right Hand. 38
