A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
