A company of the former peoples 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
