A throng of the ancients 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 That, "We have indeed been penalised!" 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
