A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
