A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
