The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
