The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 who guard their privates 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
