The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 save those that pray 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35

When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
