The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 Pollution shun! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
