The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 arise and give warning! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And all abomination shun! 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
