The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 stay away from sins 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
