The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Cloaked one, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 Purify your inner self, 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians. 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
