He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because a blind man came to him. 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 you attend to him, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And he fears, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 In honored books, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olives and palms 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And some faces will on that Day with dust be covered, 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
