He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 to a rich man, 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 and fearfully, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olives and palms 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
