Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 and ten nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Considering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 enter My Paradise! 30
