Those who were left behind rejoiced in tarrying behind the Messenger of God, and were averse to struggle with their possessions and their selves in the way of God. They said, 'Go not forth in the heat.' Say: 'Gehenna's fire is hotter, did they but understand.' 81 So let them laugh a little, for weep they will, more as retribution for what they have done. 82 Then if Allah brings you face to face with a party of them, and they ask your leave to go forth (to fight in the Way of Allah), tell them: "You shall not go forth with me, and shall never fight against any enemy along with me. You were well-pleased to remain at home the first time, so now continue to remain with those who have stayed behind." 83 Nor do thou ever pray for any of them that dies, nor stand at his grave; for they rejected Allah and His Messenger, and died in a state of perverse rebellion. 84 Their wealth or children should not tempt you; God wants to punish them through these things in this life so that they will die as disbelievers. 85 When a chapter is revealed enjoining, "Believe in God and strive for the cause of God along with His Messenger," the wealthy among them ask you to exempt them saying, "Let us stay with those who are to stay behind." 86 They were content to be with those who stayed behind, a seal was set upon their hearts, so they do not understand. 87 But the Messenger and those who believed with him struggled with their wealth and their selves For them awaits goodness and those are the winners. 88 Allah has prepared for them Gardens beneath which rivers flow. There shall they abide. That is the supreme triumph. 89
