Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the break of Day 1 and the ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
