The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
