The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 and by the moon as it follows it; 2 And the day when it shows it, 3 By the night when it envelopeth it, 4 and by the sky and by Him Who made it; 5 And the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 and failed has he who seduces it. 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety). 12 But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (Saleh)] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!" 13 However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins. 14 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. 15
