Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 Commemorate the beneficence of your Lord on Zachariah, His devotee, 2 When he cried unto his Lord a cry in secret, 3 he prayed: "O my Sustainer! Feeble have become my bones, and my head glistens with grey hair. But never yet, O my Lord, has my prayer unto Thee remained unanswered. 4 I am afraid of what my kinsmen will do after (my death) and my wife is barren. Lord, grant me a son 5 "(One that) will (truly) represent me, and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!" 6 “O Zakaria! We give you the glad tidings of a son whose name is Yahya (John) – before him, We have not created anyone of this name.” 7 He said: "My Lord! How can I have a boy when my wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age?" 8 (The angel) said, "This is true, but your Lord says, 'For Me it is easy; I created you when you did not exist". 9 He said, "My Lord, grant me a sign!" He said, "Your sign will be that you will not speak to anyone for three successive days and nights, although sound in body." 10 Then he came out to his people from Al-Mihrab (a praying place or a private room, etc.), he told them by signs to glorify Allah's Praises in the morning and in the afternoon. 11 (It was said to his son): "O Yahya (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)]." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child. 12 and tenderness [of heart] and purity. He was pious, 13 And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents). 14 'Peace be upon him, the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised up alive!' 15
