And the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had made soft in the life of the world, said: This is only a mortal like you, who eateth of that whereof ye eat and drinketh of that ye drink. 33 If you obey a mortal like yourselves, you shall be lost. 34 Does he promise you that when you are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, you will be brought forth to life? 35 ۞ Far-fetched, far-fetched indeed is what you are promised! 36 There exists only our present life: we die and we live [but once], and shall never be raised up again. 37 "He is only a man who has invented a lie against Allah, but we are not going to believe in him." 38 He said: 'Help me, Lord, they belie me' 39 Allah said: after a little while they will become regretful. 40 So the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] stubble. Then away with the wrongdoing people. 41 Then We raised up other generations after them, 42 [for,] no community can ever forestall [the end of] its term - and neither can they delay [its coming]. 43 Then We sent our messengers one after another. Whenever its messenger came unto a nation they denied him; so We caused them to follow one another (to disaster) and We made them bywords. A far removal for folk who believe not! 44 Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our tokens and a clear warrant 45 to Pharaoh and to his chiefs, but they behaved superciliously and they were haughty. 46 'What' they said, 'are we to believe in two mortals like us, whose nation are our worshipers' 47 So they rejected them both, and became those who were destroyed. 48 And We verily gave Moses the Scripture, that haply they might go aright. 49 And [as We exalted Moses, so, too,] We made the son of Mary and his mother a symbol [of Our grace,] and provided for both an abode in a lofty place of lasting restfulness and unsullied springs. 50
