Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
