The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
