And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds." 46 but when he came to them with Our signs, they ridiculed them, 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible man who can hardly make his meaning clear? 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 We took revenge on them by drowning them all together. 55 We made them become of the people of the past and an example for the coming generations. 56
