And assuredly We sent Musa with Our signs unto Fir'awn and his chiefs, and he said: verily I am an apostle of the Lord of the worlds. 46 But as soon as he came before them with Our [miraculous] signs, lo! they derided them, 47 Of all the miracles which We showed to them the latter ones were greater than the former. We struck them with torment so that perhaps they would return to Us. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 Nay! I am better than this fellow, who is contemptible, and who can hardly speak distinctly: 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 Thus he made light (of the matter) to his people, and they obeyed him. They were certainly wicked. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 And We made them a precedent and an ensample unto those after. 56
