A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
