Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the luminious Book. 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
