Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the Clear Book 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
